Maternity in Nature: Why I Love Shooting Bumps Outdoors

There’s something magical about photographing pregnancy outdoors. The light, the space and the natural calm bring maternity photos to life in a way nothing else can. Here’s why I adore outdoor maternity sessions.

There is something deeply grounding about being outdoors while pregnant.
Maybe it’s the fresh air.
Maybe it’s the quiet.
Maybe it’s the way nature mirrors the changes happening inside you - soft, powerful, gentle, expansive.

But whatever the reason, outdoor maternity sessions hold a special kind of magic.

They’re calm.
They’re freeing.
They’re honest.
And they create the most beautiful emotional photographs — without the need for anything posed, styled or forced.

This blog is a love letter to outdoor maternity photography and why I believe nature is one of the most meaningful places to document pregnancy.

1. Nature Gives You Space to Breathe

Pregnancy can feel physically and emotionally overwhelming.
Your body feels different.
Your energy shifts.
Everything feels bigger and tighter and more delicate all at once.

But when you step outdoors?

You breathe differently.

There’s room.
There’s softness.
There’s fresh air that lifts your shoulders and slows your thoughts.

Maternity sessions outdoors aren’t just photographic - they’re therapeutic.

You’re not confined to a room.
You’re not under artificial lights.
You’re not trying to squeeze your bump into a flattering indoor angle.

You’re simply existing.
Walking.
Breathing.
Connecting with the moment.

And those are the ingredients for genuinely beautiful images.

2. Natural Light Is the Most Flattering Light

The way natural light wraps around a pregnancy bump is just… magic.

Soft evening gold.
Gentle shade under the trees.
Dappled woodland light.
Overcast skies that diffuse everything beautifully.

Pregnancy looks incredible in natural light because:

  • – it softens your features
    – it gives your skin a natural glow
    – it creates movement and depth
    – it emphasises curves tenderly
    – it feels warm, real and romantic

Studio light can be lovely, but natural light is alive.
It moves with you.
It shifts with the wind.
It gives every frame emotion.

3. Nature Mirrors the Emotion of Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a season of becoming.

You’re growing a human.
You’re growing a new version of yourself.
You’re changing every single day.

Nature mirrors that growth with:

– trees stretching upwards
– flowers blooming
– leaves changing
– landscapes unfolding
– waves rolling
– light shifting

It’s symbolic without being staged.

The photos feel lyrical, emotional and timeless because they reflect something deeper than scenery.

They reflect transformation.

4. Outdoor Sessions Feel Less Posed and More Like Real Life

This is huge, especially if you’re camera-shy.

Outdoors, your body moves more naturally:

You walk.
You turn.
You breathe.
You rest your hands on your bump instinctively.
You lean into your partner.
You look around.

Nothing feels forced because you’re not stuck in a pose.
You’re simply engaging with the world around you — and the camera comes second.

Outdoor maternity sessions are 90 percent movement, 10 percent direction.
Gentle guidance, never stiff posing.

5. Outdoor Locations Create Emotion Without You Having to Do Anything

This is where South Wales truly shines — the landscapes are breathtaking
but also incredibly human.
They hold emotion naturally.

Some of my favourite outdoor maternity locations include:

Wenallt Forest

Soft woodland light, magical bluebells, calming atmosphere.

Penarth Pier + Beach

Soft, cool tones; peaceful and nostalgic.

Castell Coch Woods

Romantic, fairy-tale-like woodland.

Ogmore and Southerndown

Dramatic cliffs, warm light, sweeping coastal air.

Llandaff Fields / Local Meadows

Open, airy, gentle and perfect for golden hour.

Each location brings its own emotional palette —
calm, joy, connection, nostalgia, strength.

You don’t need to “perform.”
The location supports the feeling naturally.

6. Outdoors Helps You Feel More Like Yourself

Pregnancy can make you feel disconnected from your body at times.

But being in nature often helps shift something internally:

You slow down.
You breathe deeply.
You soften.
You reconnect.

Outdoor sessions are grounding.
Body confidence tends to improve outdoors because you’re in motion, not static.

7. Nature Gives Photos Layers of Depth and Story

When I photograph maternity sessions outdoors, I use the environment as part of the storytelling:

the texture of grass
the movement of trees
the glow of late sun
the softness of shade
the open sky
the quiet of woodland paths

These elements create layers in your images — emotional, environmental, atmospheric.

It makes your gallery feel like a story, not a photoshoot.

8. Outdoor Sessions Are Beautiful With Partners and Older Children

Outdoors gives partners and siblings room to be themselves.

Children can:

run
twirl
collect leaves
hold your hand
snuggle in
explore without pressure

Partners can walk beside you, hold your bump, look at you lovingly, or simply exist in the moment with you.

These natural interactions create emotional, unposed images.

9. Maternity in Nature Feels Timeless

Years from now, studio trends will change.

But photographs taken outdoors —
in a forest, on a beach, in a meadow —
feel timeless, classic and enduring.

Your child will see the world you stood in while carrying them.
Your love will feel rooted in something earthy and real.

10. This Is a Moment Worth Honouring

Pregnancy is hard.
Beautiful.
Exhausting.
Transformative.
Full of contradictions.

It deserves to be witnessed with tenderness.

And there is no gentler witness than nature.

Outdoor maternity sessions are quiet celebrations of your strength and softness - a way of saying:

“This is me.
This is us.
This is the moment before everything changes.”

If You’d Love Your Maternity Photos to Feel Natural, Emotional and Alive…

An outdoor maternity session might be exactly what you’re looking for.

I’d love to wander through a forest, stroll along the coast or walk softly through a meadow with you —capturing this extraordinary chapter in the most gentle, honest way.

Love,
