Christmas lights with little ones in Cardiff and South Wales
The Christmas lights and light trails in Cardiff and South Wales I'd take little ones to this year, with buggy notes, best times to go and phone photo tips.

There's a moment every December that I love more than almost anything. It's the second a little one sees the Christmas lights for the first time that year. The mouth drops open, the hand reaches out, and for a few seconds nothing else exists.

So I've put together the places I'd take little ones to see the lights around Cardiff and South Wales this year, with the dates checked, a few notes on little legs and buggies, and my tips for getting a photo of that face on your phone.

Cardiff city centre
The Cardiff Christmas lights switch on Thursday 12th November, and that's the day the whole city starts to sparkle.
Winter Wonderland on the City Hall Lawn opens the same day and runs until 3rd January. It's free to walk in, there's free family entertainment, and this year there's a new accessible Big Wheel. The ice rink and Ice Walk are in the Cardiff Castle grounds over the same dates.
Cardiff Christmas Market runs from 12th November to 23rd December, and the Victorian Christmas Market is on Queen Street from 12th to 15th November only, so catch that one early.
Little ones tip: go just as it gets dark, around half four, before the after work crowds arrive. You get the lights without the late night, and you're home for tea and bath.
Christmas at Bute Park
If you only do one light trail this year, this is the one I'd choose. Christmas at Bute Park runs from 19th November to 31st December, roughly 4:15pm to 8:30pm. It's a mile long walk through four sections called Magic, Wonder, Hope and Joy, right in the middle of the city.
There are also two inclusive evenings planned for neurodiverse guests, which I think is lovely to see.
Little ones tip: book one of the earliest slots. A mile is a long way for a toddler at the end of the day, so a buggy or a carrier for the second half will save you. Tickets are on the Christmas at Bute Park website, so book ahead.

Luminate at Margam Country Park
A little further along the M4, Luminate Wales is back at Margam Country Park in Port Talbot from 24th November 2026 to 2nd January 2027. It's another mile long trail through the gardens, set to music, with interactive bits for the kids (and the big kids) to play with along the way.
Halfway round there's hot food in the café courtyard, and fire pits for toasting marshmallows, which is reason enough for most small people.
Little ones tip: this one is a proper evening out, so I'd save it for older toddlers and children. Wrap up warmer than you think, because the castle grounds feel a lot colder than the city once the sun goes down.

Dyffryn Gardens, for an early bedtime
Not every little one can do a dark evening trail, and that's completely fine. From 5th December to 4th January, Dyffryn Gardens in the Vale of Glamorgan has a winter walk past beautifully decorated Christmas trees, plus a Games Hub with giant games.
There's no booking, it's included in normal admission (free for National Trust members), and the route is suitable for buggies and mobility aids. It's my pick for babies, or for a winter afternoon when bedtime is non negotiable.
Tredegar House, Newport
Closer to home for me, Tredegar House in Newport usually fills the house with Christmas trees in December, with visits from Father Christmas on certain days. Check the National Trust website for this year's dates and times before you go.
How to photograph little ones under the Christmas lights
The lights look magical in real life and then come out as a blurry orange smudge on your phone. Here's what makes the biggest difference.
- Turn the flash off. The flash flattens the lights and gives everyone red eyes. Let the lights do the work instead.
- Use night mode, and hold still. Most phones switch to it on their own in the dark. Tuck your elbows in or lean on a wall or a bench while it takes the photo.
- Light on their face. Turn them so the lights are on their face, not behind them. Lights behind them look pretty but leave their face in shadow.
- Get down to their height. Crouch down so you're seeing the lights the way they do. It changes everything.
- Burst mode for the reach. When they reach out to touch a light, hold the button down. One of those frames will be the one.
- Get in it yourself. Hand someone your phone, or ask a stranger. You're part of this Christmas too, and one day they'll want photos of you with them.
And if you'd love one done for you
If you'd rather put your phone away and just enjoy it, my Cosy Christmas Sessions are on Sunday 15th November at Teddy's Place studio in Cardiff. A warm, Christmassy set and photos you'll want to bring out every December. These fill faster than I ever expect them to.
